While the verb SER is used for permanent characteristics, ESTAR is used for locations, temporary states, and moods. A good way to remember it is: “How you feel and where you are, always use the verb ESTAR.”

  • Location: To describe where someone or something is located.
    • Madrid está en España.
    • Yo estoy en la oficina.
  • Temporary States / Conditions: To describe how someone feels or the physical state of something.
    • La sopa está caliente. (The soup is hot).
    • Ella está cansada. (She is tired).
  • Emotions: * Nosotros estamos muy felices. (We are very happy).
